Brown Canada
Brown Canada is a community-led project documenting, creating and sharing South Asian histories in Canada. Our collective entry point is through the Komagata Maru story of 1914. Committed volunteers and skate holders have shaped the projects design and direction, which has included a series of workshops, arts-based projects, and the development of a play and resource book.
We’ve been thrilled to have been a part of this project for the last couple of months by contributing the creative direction and design of printed materials associated with the project.
Last night was the Brown Canada Showcase and the world premiere of Oh Canada, Oh Komagata Maru!, a series of vignettes written and directed by Alia Somani. Sheila was in attendance (with her Dad!) and accepted an award of appreciation on behalf of the team at The Public. It was great to see a full room of people eager to talk about the significance of the Komagata Maru, how our histories are taught back to us, Indigenous solidarity and the ongoing struggle for social and economic justice among Indigenous and racialized communities.
The timing of the project is significant: two years after the racist media coverage of the MV Sun Sea boat of Tamil migrants landed on B.C. shores, and two years before the 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru, we certainly have a lot to think about, challenge and re-shape.
